Egba kingdoms set for Kings Cup battle at Abeokuta Golf Club by : 2:47 am On August 20, 2021

Abeokuta Golf Club is primed for one of the biggest competitions in the southwest region in recent years. It is the second edition of the King’s Cup, which will pit the four kingdoms of Egbaland in a contest that means more than just a golf competition.

According to the organisers, the teams are expected to arrive in Abeokuta on October 8, while the competition will hold on October 10, 2021.

Apart from the trophies at stake, there is the added incentive of cementing the unity of the ancient kingdom, which over the years has produced great leaders for Nigeria.

Fighting for bragging rights and honour are the kingdoms of Gbagura, Ake, Owu and Oke-Ona, who will all field teams in the one-day competition. There will also be individual players, who will get the chance to strut their stuff on the hallowed Abeokuta Golf Club’s greens.

Speaking at the press conference to herald the competition, chairman of the local organising committee, Wale Adeogun, disclosed that this year’s competition has been expanded to include more ladies and teams, adding, “the Egba royalty in all their grace will be part of the show.”

According to Adeogun, “The first edition was held during the peak of COVID-19, which restricted the competition to only two teams. Now, we have agreed to expand the field to ensure that all the parts of the kingdom are represented. We expect about 150 players to battle for various honours.

“The aim is to use golf to restore unity among Egba people and also showcase our culture.” Adeogun revealed that more prizes are at stake for winners, adding, however, “we are still expecting more sponsors to increase the prizes at stake.”

Last year, the winners got all-expense paid trip to Kenya courtesy one of the sponsors, while the two teams got N500, 000 for two charities of their choice.

He emphasised that COVID-19 health protocols would be strictly observed by the participants during the tournament.

Also speaking at the event, chief executive officer of Nilayo Sports Management, Bukola Olopade, said his outfit decided to support the King’s Cup because of its significance to Egba kingdom.

He added: “I am particularly happy that the competition has been enlarged to include all the four kingdoms in Egbaland.

“This is the first time we will be having a unifying programme in the kingdom.

“We thank our sponsors, Rite Foods, for agreeing to support this competition because golf is a difficult event to market.”

In her contribution, representative of the major sponsors, Rite Foods, Boluwatife Adedugbe, said her company chose to be part of the competition because “we like to support our consumers. We are happy with our relationship with Nilayo Sports to empower our society.

“We want to help Nigerians to support our local brands. We want to play a big part in the race to grow the country’s quality products of which we represent.”
