A university teacher, Prof. Ayobami Ojebode and a Bishop, Dr. Olukunle Amoo, have urged parents and schools to take books to digital platforms to further promote reading culture among youths.

Ojebode, who is the immediate past Head of Department of Language and Communication Arts at the University of Ibadan (UI), emphasised that books must be taken to where the youths are present, which is the online platform.

They spoke in Ibadan at the public presentation and launch of five books written by Amoo. The books are Your Miracle Will Happen, The Other Side of Politics, The Wedding Gift, No More Delay and Blooming Rose.

Ojebode, who was the book reviewer, lauded the author for his intellectual exploits.

On promotion of reading culture among youths, the Professor of Development Communication said: “Our reading culture is growing and getting better if we define reading beyond holding a hardcopy book and reading it for exams and so on. Most people now read messages on their numerous WhatsApp groups and other social media platforms. To promote reading, schools and parents should seek to ‘meet their children where they are,’ and that is online. Books must begin to look different. These kids are ready to read and they are reading, but not the form of books that we knew.

“We can ensure that social media does not erode reading culture by turning it to a tool that serves our culture. If we want our children to love and respect our culture, let us put the cultural message and content in the form that appeals to them”.

On his part, Amoo said the grace of God, focus and vision were his motivation for writing the books.

He also called for introduction of incentives to encourage reading among youths and adults.
